Matryoshka Doll History

Matryoshka dolls, also known as "nesting dolls," have become a symbol of Russian culture around the world. Their name comes from the diminutive of "Matryona," a popular Russian female name. The first Matryoshka doll was created in 1890 by an artisan named Vasily Zvyozdochkin, who was inspired by a similar Japanese toy. Matryoshka dolls are usually hand-painted and often depict Russian folk characters.
